Tips for completing job applications
- Decide whether the job is for you before you apply
- Set aside plenty of time
- Make a copy of the application form to use as a draft
- Read the instructions carefully before you start
- Use a black pen
- Complete all sections neatly and accurately
- Be positive
- Proof read and check spellings
- Get someone to read through your application
- Keep a copy of the completed form – a reminder of the information you sent if you get an interview

Before the interview
- Find out how long it will last
- Are there any practical exercises?
- Do you need to bring anything?
- Research about the company
- Re-check the job description – be clear about what the job/role involves
- Get a good night’s sleep
- Be careful what you eat e.g. avoid garlic
Where is the interview
- Know how to get there, how long the journey will take – do a practice run
- Leave adequate time for your journey
- Aim to arrive ideally 10 minutes before the interview

- Your CV and a copy of the application for the job you completed
- A list of questions
Personal preparation
- Have a good standard of hygiene – never underestimate the importance of your appearance
- Don’t use overpowering deodorants, perfumes or after shaves etc
- Avoid inappropriate jewellery
- Shoes – clean, not too high
- Appropriate dress – clean and tidy
During the interview
- Talk about yourself positively
- Sit reasonably upright – do not slouch
- Don’t cross your arms
- Maintain good eye contact
- Don’t talk too fast – take a deep breath before answering
- Try to not waffle – keep your answers concise
- Ask them to repeat the question if you don’t understand
- Give examples of previous experience
- Switch off your mobile phone
